Altruism is a rare quality in today’s world, and even rarer to find in a recording artist. However, the professional synchronicity between Coutain and his visionary partner, Dwala, is not just driven by a desire to create compelling art it is also rooted in altruism and loyalty.
“Dwala and I met through the legendary Kriston Koon Koon. I was invited to his listening party where we met briefly, and later, while shooting African Dancer, Kriston passed by, leading to our formal introduction. We then set a day to reason about music, where Father gave me his word on creating a sound for Coutain. Three years later, the rest is history,” Coutain shared.
Echoing the same sentiments of gratitude towards Dwala, Coutain stated, “It’s literally a family bond—truth, transparency, honesty. He’s like a father, so we’re a duo for real. This is a matter of God’s will.”
The impact of this partnership is undeniable, evidenced by the growing buzz around Coutain’s latest singles, “Kanvas” and “Artform,” which recently surpassed one million views on YouTube. For half a decade, Coutain has been a prince of Trinidad & Tobago’s underground music scene. As a mellifluous vocalist and gifted writer, he has remained relevant despite his unwillingness to conform to the Soca norms dominating the island’s music landscape.
In recounting the creative process behind his smash hit “Artform,” Coutain asserted, “This was one where we really wanted to capture that old-school dub essence—mostly for the entire album—but also maintain a balance with the melodic, dub feel. Then OG Dwala, as usual, brought the idea to life by playing every single instrument. That was a moment for sure. I remember we listened to it almost 20–50 times when we first came up with the idea, so engulfed by the nostalgia it brought us. No joke!”
With a legion of adoring female fans proudly championing his success, the burning question remains: What will it take for Coutain to ascend to the music superstardom his talent deserves? Since the release of the music videos for “Artform” and “Kanvas,” Coutain has once again solidified himself as the artist to watch from Trinidad & Tobago. This year promises to be a transformative milestone in his artistic trajectory, marking a period of growth, innovation, and creative evolution that will shape the next chapter of his musical journey.
