Sleep is supposed to restore the body, not slowly break it down. But for more than one billion people worldwide, including over one million Jamaicans, sleep is doing quiet damage every single night.
Fontana Pharmacy has joined forces with ISD Health Solutions to confront one of the most dangerous and underdiagnosed medical conditions on the planet: sleep apnea. The new Sleep Health Care initiative brings clinical-grade sleep screening and support directly into the community, moving life-saving care out of the shadows and into everyday access.
Sleep apnea is a serious condition where breathing repeatedly stops during sleep, causing oxygen levels to drop and placing intense strain on the heart and brain. It has been strongly linked to high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke, erectile dysfunction, and fatigue-related motor vehicle accidents. The danger is not just in how common it is, but in how often it goes unnoticed.
“We’ve seen the damage oxygen deprivation can cause. COVID taught the world how critical oxygen is to survival,” says Gregory Arneaud, Founder and Clinical Director of ISD Health Solutions. “Now imagine that same slow suffocation happening night after night, unnoticed. That’s what sleep apnea does.”
For many patients, diagnosis comes too late, often after a heart attack, stroke, or serious accident. According to Arneaud, this partnership is about changing that pattern and catching warning signs before disaster strikes.
“If you or someone you love snores loudly, wakes up exhausted, or struggles with high blood pressure, this might be your warning,” he says. “Because how you sleep is how you live.”
Through the initiative, Fontana customers now have access to the Sleep O2 Ring, a medical-grade, easy-to-use home monitoring device that tracks overnight oxygen levels and heart rate. The data helps identify sleep-related breathing disorders early, without requiring a hospital stay or overnight lab visit.
What sets the program apart is continuity of care. Each Sleep O2 Ring includes a QR code that connects users directly to ISD Health Solutions’ clinical team, ensuring support does not stop at diagnosis. Patients are guided by Dr. Terry Baker, a pulmonologist and internist, alongside a team of U.S. board-certified sleep physicians and dentists. The care model also includes expert guidance on oral appliance therapy using hushd devices for those who qualify.
To launch the initiative, ISD Health Solutions will host an all-day activation event on Saturday, January 31, from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM at Fontana Barbican Centre, next to Loshusan, in Kingston 6.
Gregory Arneaud will be on site, offering medical insights, answering questions, and sharing guidance on sleep health and treatment options. Attendees will also have the chance to win a free Sleep O2 Ring and take part in on-the-spot education aimed at helping Jamaicans better understand how sleep impacts long-term health.
