What an incredible journey the Reggae Girlz have been on, and how great it has been to have seen it all. During the rise of the team, many downplayed their abilities and doubted how far they could go. After all, the Reggae Boyz didn’t make it as far as we all had hoped, so why would we believe in the girls? As a former football player, I too have experienced and witnessed the discrimination against women in sports, and the ruthless comparisons made at every stage. Through the stereotypes and downgrading commentary, women are still expected to perform their best and “prove” the talent they so desperately know they have. As women in sports, this is a joyful time for us all.
Let’s recap, shall we? Cedella Marley revived the team back in 2012 with her own money and on her own time. She led the process of recruiting players and coaches, organised jerseys, sponsored the team’s endeavours, etc. She is to be recognized for her great contribution to the team’s success. The rise of the Reggae Girlz began back when they won the Gold Cup and qualified for the 2019 Women’s World Cup, and reigned undefeated until one of their last matches against Scotland.
During the World Cup qualifier matches the girls lost in the semi-final match in which they battled USA. In a fight for third place against Panama they won on penalties and secured their spot in the World Cup competition. Their group consists of Italy, Brazil, and Australia.
In the Men’s World Cup’s where Jamaica didn’t make it as far, Brazil was the country’s favourite team. All across the island supporters of the Brazil football team were covered in flags and bright blue, yellow, and green; will we see this support for the Reggae Girlz? The reaction throughout Jamaica to the girls’ success has been none other than an interesting yet important turnout.
Many are shocked and continue to support off the basis of “this is unbelievable”. Many as well are not interested, not impressed, and not checking for the team. This is a crucial time for Jamaica to step up the support game for a team that so deeply deserves it, and quite frankly, needs it. The girls represent the country with such pride and integrity, true Jamaican spirit.
Players to watch include Khadija Shaw (midfield), Ashleigh Shim (forward), and Sydney Schneider (goalkeeper). All three have been huge contributors to the team, playing some of the best football we’ve seen from our country. The team overall has been known to have great team spirit and resilience. Marley has fostered a respectful and like-minded team environment, one that is so focused on success that the trivial issues are incapable of disrupting the team’s energy.
The girls play their first match on June 9 against Brazil, this might be the most difficult match they play thus far. Brazil is known to play great football throughout all teams and all competitions – we are in for a serious battle! This match is definitely one to watch out of all of the first round of matches.
