A’jaun Burton
After thinking about this for a little while, I surmised that I’m not sure who I am creatively. I’ve never liked feeling limited in anything I’m doing. Photography allows me the pleasure of trying many things because it’s so broad and I want to try them all if I’m able to. I’m an individual who is willing to try different things with my art, whether I’m comfortable or not. Photography has caused me to be especially curious and that curiosity is the driving force behind my passion as well as that rush I get when I capture a shot I know is fire. I’m always chasing that feeling. Photography is helping me figure out who exactly I am as an individual as well as creatively. There are limitations that I’ve faced, as we all have, but that is the challenge; findings ways to make art with what is available to you. Ultimately, I’m working to nurture my talent and my art and as they grow, I’ll do the same.
Innocence of Youth
Just being at the beach, I saw these two young boys having the time of their lives with the waves. The innocence of both boys, just having fun with the waves and each other is priceless. Candid shots tend to be some of the best shots in my opinion and this is one of those.
Maternity: Expectancy
Celebration of a child to come. The already solid bond between a mother and her unborn child. These were the things I tried to keep in mind for this particular shoot. All natural, the mother-to-be never stopped smiling, even though she’d been through all the rigors of pregnancy.
Khaleesi
Another candid shot, this time at Xodus’ Band Launch. This night I got to the event late and had to settle for a spot that wasn’t front and centre but off to the side. Abihail was clearly having fun so she gets as much credit as I do for this one. An undesirable spot put me in position to get a shot that I loved immediately. So, I’d say it worked out.
Engagement: With This Ring
I was fortunate to be asked to capture Hannah and Paul’s engagement at the Chinese Gardens at Hope Gardens. The leading lines of the bridge gave the shot a nice composition. This was to highlight the engagement ring but I think it’s hard to ignore Paul in the background who was asked to stand still but clearly couldn’t contain his excitement.
Until November Ends
My inability to dance is far outweighed by my appreciation for it. I had a lot of fun shooting Dance Theatre Xaymaca’s 24th Season of Dance. This shot, for me, has a level of poetry about it as well as some reverence. The ladies all came together into a cluster after which they proceeded to reach out for something. What that is, is up to you to determine. But that I think is the beauty of dance, we can all gather different things from the same routine.
A Girl Called Free
For this shoot, I wanted the images to feel personal and fluid. Fluid just means that it needed to not look forced. I also took it quite literally with the use of the fabric blowing in the wind. What I love about this shot is that while Shanelle is up close and personal, she still feels somewhat withdrawn within the fabric.
