As September rolls around and summer 2018 becomes another memory, it is hard not to reminisce about the soca songs that made Crop Over 2018 so blissful. Whether sweet, bashment or party Bajan soca artists made a variety of songs that really resonated with party goers.
If one does not know what Crop Over is, in summary, it is Barbados’s carnival which takes place between June and August. With a mixture of parties, competitions and cultural events, Crop Over is deemed the sweetest summer festival of Barbados
So let’s talk about the music.
From the beginning of the summer until even now, there is one song that made every girl “bend over” when they heard “Hype Hype Hype caan done!” because they knew that “Correction Time” by Jagwa the Champion was going to play. This song was a bop all Crop Over. From the beat to the sexual lyrics it made an inner wildness escape from anyone who heard it. “Correction Time” was arguably one the most hyped bashment soca songs of the season. If it didn’t play at a party or an event then something was horribly wrong. Another popular bashment song was “Aye” by Mole and Brucelee Almightee. This song garnered the same behaviour as Correction Time or maybe even worse.

But you can’t talk about Crop Over 2018 without mentioning Lil Rick, who is one of the most popular soca artist in Barbados and the man who dominated the season. Lil Rick brought out an album of songs this summer and not one was disappointing. From “Breakfast in Bed” to “Mudda Sally”, “Ben it”, “True Story” and “Hover it”, Lil Rick had a jam for every feeling and every party. This is why he won Road March, Foreday Jam Tune, International Bashment Soca and Sweet Soca Monarch. This was Lil Rick’s year and he deserved it. The only title he didn’t win was Party Monarch which Mickey won with “Feting Family”; a song that made you feel like everyone in the fete was your cousin.

2018 was also the year for Jus D. An artist who is well known behind the scenes but this year stepped into the spotlight with hits like “Manager”, “Only thing that she knows” and “Hole”. “Manager” was an anthem for every independent female and “Hole” had everyone singing and jamming to the slick lyrics. There was also, Joaquin, a young artist who has been on the scene for a while but this year caught everyone’s attention with his song “Tiney Winey”. Another song every female loved.

Speaking of females we can’t forget our girls like Nikita with the soul-warming song “Journey”, Shanta Prince who gave us that spicy Bajan wine with “Throw Wine” and of course Rhea Layne who made it more fun to jam with your “Best Friend”.
However, credit must be given to some regional artiste whose music was pure vibes this summer. First, we have to talk about Vincentian, Fimba with “Funky Business” who had everyone screaming those lyrics at the top of their lungs. Lil Natty and Thunda from Grenada with “Top Striker” which gave everyone a workout in a party. Shall Marshall with “Splinters” which made a party go crazy. And of course almost every Machel Montano song.
These are only just a few credible songs from this season but there were a lot of great songs that made not only Crop Over a fantastic one but will contribute to great carnivals worldwide this year.
