With 321K subscribers, 812 videos, and counting, Shevon Salmon is one YouTuber who deserves every click and like that comes his way. After a trip to Jamaica, Carib Voxx caught up with Shevon to talk about his YouTube journey.
“I am not a tech reviewer.” Written in his YouTube bio, that title doesn’t do Shevon Salmon justice, as his content gives way more. The Jamaican-born, Canadian-based Youtuber sees himself as covering a broader spectrum of technology as he uses it in his everyday life and shows his audience how it could fit into theirs. In turn giving a more personal view of the technology and its uses as opposed to regurgitating stats, numbers, and dimensions.
Manchester Jamaica-raised and a past student of DeCarteret College, Shevon moved to Toronto, Canada, in 2016, explaining to Carib Voxx the vision he had for himself and how staying in Jamaica would not yield the results he desired. Through the tunnel vision of his dreams, he elaborated on how he only applied to schools overseas at the time in alignment with his vision. The year 2016 was also a milestone for Shevon; it was the year he began his YouTube journey and emphasized his determination from the get-go.
“I started taking it more seriously in the pandemic, and around that time I started seeing more revenue and more brand deals, but it was around 2022 when I quit my corporate job to go full-time on YouTube,” explained Shevon. At the time, he was working in the marketing industry, as his degree is in the field of advertising and marketing, which he studied at Humber College. Shevon continued, “I did have to do the corporate job, but I just wanted to experience it. I liked it, but to give my all to YouTube, I couldn’t stay in that job.”
To speak to the success of his channel, he has worked with household brand names such as Intel, HP, Samsung, and so much more. We questioned his process for brand selection, which he explained includes narrowing down brands that he usually uses personally. He recalled moments of sending countless emails to brands for product reviews free of charge until some of them proved fruitful, then compared it to his growth, where he is now choosing the brands to work with.
Of course, we couldn’t let the opportunity pass to find out Shevon’s three favourite technologies of 2023 so far. Naturally, he opted to choose the tech he finds most useful in his field and daily life; these include his camera, a Sony A7SIII, a Mac Studio with which he edits, and finally his iPhone 14 Pro Max for content creation and videos on the go. “If I was stranded on an island, I could put out a YouTube video with those devices,” he told us confidently.
When asked about the next step in his career, he mentioned plans to launch his brand and have a studio for content creation, as he currently works from his home space. This would increase certain professionalism and productivity in his craft and career by separating his home space from his living space and, in turn, building a business.
We hear every day about the opportunities of the modern world, and Shevon is one person who made the most of today by identifying his goals early and working towards them dexterously. For YouTubers in Jamaica and the wider Caribbean, Shevon is undoubtedly an inspiration through his journey and work.
