Graphic artist, Lawrence Deacon, has made a name for himself amongst the art/music collective in Jamaica and globally. The 24-year-old has grabbed the attention of many, doing posters and cover art for top artists such as Chronixx and Grammy-winning Koffee. He launched his own brand Delawness in March of 2018, hosting his first solo exhibition, titled Waves, which was held at the Montego Bay Convention Center. Now adding to his brand is his interest in creating music. Deacon has always sought to expand himself as a creative. He released his first song, Introspeq, in December 2020 and it has since then received over 10,000 streams on Spotify. The track features vocals from singer Yasi B backed by a calming and refreshing rhythm and if you did not think the track could get any better, well, just take a look at the beauty and vibrancy present in the cover art. We had the opportunity to speak with Deacon to learn more about his new track and trust me, after reading this article if you have not listened to the song you will definitely want to.
CARIB VOXX: Tell us more about Introspeq and what you would like people to get from the track.
Deacon: “Introspeq is a collector’s edition project, conceptualized around art, music, and fashion. This track is an artist statement that expresses my true feelings and meaning behind the artwork. What I would like people to get from the track, is to understand my state of mind during the process, to connect with oneself, to be more self-aware, and that introspection allows one to connect deeply within oneself by asking these questions: Who am I? Who I wanna be?”
CARIB VOXX: What made you expand Delawness to include music?
Deacon: “Delawness is the embodiment of various disciplines within the Arts. Also, I love music. I listen to various genres. I also write and breathe music daily. It is like a remedy to my depression, an antidote to my anxieties, and a cure to the madness that surrounds me at times. Music connects all my art pieces. Delawness is art, music is art. When I listen to music, during my process, it helps me to focus. I have worked with great musical artists both locally and internationally; this experience is now a part of my journey which I come to appreciate.”
CARIB VOXX: As we know, culture is dynamic and inclusive of many components. How significant do you think combining art and music is, and what impact do you think this combination could have?
Deacon: “Art and music are significant in our modern-day culture both locally and globally. The impact of this pre-existing combination created an impact that formed the cultures around the world since the existence of mankind. As we know, art and music is an expressive language of culture and characteristics of society. It often reflects and expresses our emotions or ideas, whether abstract or realistic. Art and music are left up to one’s interpretation, hence the impact varies, however, most times, it’s universally understood to connect people of similar thoughts and ideas in a common ground.”
CARIB VOXX: How important is it to you as a creative to merge both art and music?
Deacon: “Art and music as always present themselves together on various platforms. Frankly, we as a society do not pay much attention to the importance of visual arts. The Introspeq project will allow my audience to connect more with my process, to understand my ideas, and myself. For example, if my work is discovered through fashion, those who love fashion will inquire about visual art. Once they have discovered my art, they will discover the music. The music then interprets the art.”
CARIB VOXX: One of the many buzzwords of our generation is the word growth, how has quarantine aided in your growth as an artist and the growth of your brand Delawness?
Deacon: “Introspeq has allowed me time to search deeper within myself, and has created a new form of self-awareness through self-discovery. My influence stemmed from the results of the global pandemic and other experiences that 2020 brought. To see the world in shambles in front of my eyes, left me hopeless. My thoughts about life became dark and desperate, but I knew deep, deep down inside there had to be a light, I was that light, the light that led me to draw, to write Introspeq, I wrote the song as a reflection of my raw thoughts. In the end, I have learned to appreciate the painful experiences as a part of my journey and growth as a youth.”
