Join our host, Lushane Salmon, as he speaks with the internationally recognized dancehall and reggae artist, musician, producer, and engineer Demarco about the release of his new album and how he has been honing his talents during the pandemic. Demarco is no stranger to the music scene, having produced hit riddims such as “Big League Riddim” and “Stress Free Riddim”, and has featured names such as Bounty Killer, Tony Matterhorn, and Elephant Man to name a few. He also produced his afrobeat hit, “No Wahala”, featuring Akon and Runtown.
In this week’s episode, Demarco addresses creating music during the coronavirus pandemic, becoming a father to his newborn daughter Melody who inspired the name of his upcoming album, strategies for success in the music business, and changes in regards to government and media operations that he believes would strengthen the local music structure of Jamaica.
“We don’t have no proper label to put out the music as well. Everybody is a label a Jamaica…we don’t have a big record label weh planted in Jamaica.”He went further to examine the possibilities of support. “Seh all Popcaan drop him album, everybody go support it, the album sell all gold. You ago have Universal deh a Jamaica, you ago have Columbia deh a Jamaica, one bag a tings ’cause dem jus’ waan fi see seh the music a sell, enuh. Di whole a dem ago have office down deh.”
He mentions the importance of using more English in Jamaican songs, ensuring quality in terms of an artist’s image and presentation, and the necessity of paying taxes so that benefits can be received for further investment into one’s craft.
