Known locally as “The Dancing Machine’” or “The Zouk Machine”, Made in Mizik produces authentic melodic blends inspired by rhythms – such as zouk and chouval bwa – native to Martinique. Chouval bwa is linked with bèlè drumming and has a “call-and-response” lyrical style, where the music is delivered in a conversational format between ‘voices’ or singers. Songs sung using this technique are usually performed by chantwèls (storytelling singers of this style and genre).
The group was originally formed in 2013 by percussionist and vocalist Gilles Guilon and multi-instrumentalist David Chantalou. Since then, both Guilon and Chantalou have collaborated with many notable artists like Claude Vamur, Marie-Céline Chroné, and Dédé Saint-Prix.
On Thursday (January 21), the duo will take to the stage for a live performance, accompanied by appearances by several other musicians, to introduce the repertoire behind their fourth album. The lineup for this concert includes Guadeloupean dancehall singer Misié Sadik, multi-talented “maverick of Martinique music” Max Télѐphe, renowned French musician Jacob Desvarieux, zouk singer Djoriann, veteran musician José Zébina, and singer Suzy Trébeau, who is dubbed “one of the most beautiful voices of Zouk in Martinique”.
The concert will be broadcast on Martinique’s most-watched channel, ViàATV. With a spectacularly experienced cast such as this one, the production promises to showcase some of the best of the island’s and French-Caribbean’s culture. The concert will also be available for live stream on the station’s Facebook page at ViàATV – Live | Facebook.
