“I want it to motivate and inspire as we all struggle with something. We all should know there are better
days while still remaining true to self.” – Lawrence’s aim with his work.

Graphic designers and Illustrators are often overlooked in our society. Lawrence L Deacon is a dynamic and creative illustrator, graphic designer and producer, whose art not only captivates our eyes but leaves us thinking and reflecting on our own challenges in life and ways in which we can overcome them. He aims to motivate and inspire others through his works regardless of his own difficulties.

His most recent piece, Waves & Pain, was released on December 25, 2019. The piece which consists of a myriad of bright colours and swirls has a deep meaning to it. It is set to remind us of our own internal struggles with society and how these problems are common to all of us. It also explores how we use social media applications to seek validation. Carib Voxx had the pleasure of speaking with Lawrence L Deacon about Waves & Pain and his future plans.

INSPIRATION BEHIND WAVES & PAIN

Waves & PAin

“Waves & Pain is an expression of my struggles and triumphs as an artist. As a graphic designer, creative director, and illustrator, I create from my experiences to reflect my innermost feelings, desires, and challenges. You can expect to find subliminal messages beneath the surface of my drawings. My truest, darkest and brightest thoughts only flow better when I sit down and take flight on white paper. Waves & Pain is inspired by my personal struggle with overcoming the vicissitudes of life, adapting to changes, experiencing growth and observing society’s back-and-forth relationship with money. Big money talk, how the rich can manipulate, marginalize and control our poor under the belief that “money is power”.”

Since the release of Waves and Pain, Lawrence was able to encounter new experiences. He looks forward to producing his first album and working on new projects.

“It’s really lovely watching my artwork spread internationally to the reach of over 70 countries. A lot has changed, 2020 started off high doing TV interviews and traveling to Dubai. I started producing music for my first album. That’s something I am truly excited for.”

WHAT’S NEXT FOR DEACON

“2020 is a big big year as I am doing something new and unexpected from a visual artist especially in Jamaica. I am working on my first collaborative music album, as I anticipate its release, my biggest goal is to reach major publications like New York Times, GQ, Rolling Stones, Pitchfork, Billboard and Complex. I am really positive about the project getting a Grammy.” Deacon told Carib Voxx. He also told us how he would love to work with international producer Rvssian and international recording artist Shenseea in the future as he thinks that together they could create something phenomenal.

“I would like to collaborate with Shenseea & Rvssian on a project. I believe working with both producer & singer/songwriter and me as a graphic designer/illustrator specialized in branding would be something great since I have additional ideas on not just album art or music branding but also how to package an experience that their audience will remember and cherish for a lifetime.” – Deacon said.

WORDS OF WISDOM TO THE FUTURE GENERATION

Finally, we could not end our interview without hearing Deacon’s advice for future illustrators and “creatives” worldwide. He encourages the future generation to stay focused, to believe in themselves but to never lean on their own understanding. He also highlights the importance of having patience especially during the creation of Waves & Pain where he gained his biggest lesson in patience.

Waves & Pain is available for free on his website. Waves & Pain now also has an Instagram filter, feel free to check it out and follow Lawrence Deacon on all social media platforms @lawrencedeacon1.
