Spanish Town will never be the same. The area has continuously spit out some of Jamaica’s major talents like Papa San, Lady G, Govana and Chronixx, but now they have Koffee. It is safe to say that she is currently Jamaica’s favourite Singjay and she is still so young with so much more to explore, musically. One can only imagine what will come next.
‘Rapture’, the title track from Koffee’s recently dropped EP is now a remix featuring one of the fastest growing dancehall deejays, Govana. The music video was shot and directed by RD Studios and 300k. He’s known for singles like ‘Shrimp Patty’, ‘Gyal Clown’ and ‘Bake Bean’.
With Govana also being from Spanish Town, it was no doubt the video release was dedicated to the town that built the two artists. The area is known to be a ‘ruff’ place, especially in these most recent times with the Zones of Special Operation taking place. The Rapture video was crafted in such a clever way to match the lyrics of the song, creating a symbol of hope for Spanish Town.
Spanish Town for many is home, and not this place of violence that the media paints. Despite the said tense surrounding, the songs let us know that ‘yutes’ will never give up. They are determined to make a better life and rise up out of poverty.
“Dem nuh like to see di yutes dem healthy and wealthy
So before dem help we dem belt we, dem bench we
Ghetto youths from Sainty and Denbigh medz fi
Build up mama house and buy di Benz dem and Bentley”
– Govana
The song then reflects an anthem for those in hardship, especially youths, allowing them to know that it can only get better. It feeds positivity into the souls of Jamaican people, letting them know they can achieve anything they put their minds to.
“Tell dem Jah gimme no limit, no
Dem seh Koffee but you a whole midget, grow
But when mi spit lyrics mi doh fidget wid it, sho’ did it
Gold wid it like mi gold dig it, pro”
– Koffee
Spanish Town is a ‘Rapture’ for Koffee and Govana. Like anyone that grows up in a community, they will experience a certain pleasure when thinking of family and the space in which you walked the streets, worshipped, blazed up your first cigarette or tried weed for the first time. The music video displays just that. The good and the unpleasant, the youthfulness and the hardcore-ness of the area. It depicts the realness of a place people love and call home.
“Sista Koffee with the gold sound
Spain town pickney big up the whole town”
– Govana
