Semantics define a Mood as a temporary feeling or state of mind but Teejay and Ishawna’s newest single has the potential to permanently change the mood of dancehall forever. The phenomenon of the man/woman collaboration is an identifiable trait in the genre which has proven itself to be successful on numerous occasions. Upon that premise, it is beyond reasonable to postulate that the relevance and potential of Mood as a collaboration is timeless.
Since his astronomical rise to stardom in 2018 with “Uptop Boss” Teejay has displayed a unique ability to balance hardcore lyrics with a mellifluous voice paired with catchy melodic choices. “Mood” is indeed reflective of the more mellifluous side of Teejay’s music and Ishawna is indeed the perfect collaborator for this project. Her defiant commitment to empowering women through her liberality, sensuality and celebration of her outrageous beauty; puts Ishawna in her comfort zone on Mood.
In authentic dancehall fashion, Teejay’s chorus is laden with compliments for Ishawna as he expresses that her love making ability exceeds experiences he had in the past. He professes to being enamored by her while encouraging her to liberate herself. Ishawna furthers the narrative by aggrandizing her sensual prowess substantiating that she is indeed worth the adulation that Teejay expresses.
The underlined theme of the song and video is reciprocity, as both artists express a shared desire to prioritize each other’s physical needs. The visuals are perfectly congruent with the theme and vibe of the song and Lagikz Supreme color correction style and shot selection accentuated the feel of a tropical oasis. The interaction between Ishawna and Teejay also seems very natural and it wouldn’t be a surprise if the fans started speculating that the collaboration is indicative of other dynamics between the two.
Khalfani Records & Top Braff Music cultivated the ideal musical accompaniment for this collaboration to be explored. The chord progressions in the instrumental though simple are sonically very pleasing and are paired with effective syncopation patterns on the drums and kick. His use of filters on certain parts of the instrumental mix give the song dynamic range which enables the listening experience to feel like an escapade.
Regardless of what fans might speculate, these two artists are no strangers to controversy and have careers defined by resilience and steely determination. Despite the fun, sensual vibe of the visuals; it is the determination that the two possess as individual artists that is the bounding dynamic which pulls this collaboration together. It cannot be re-iterated enough how effectively the congruence between the song and visual work and though Summer recently concluded, Mood might keep us in that frame of mind forever.
