Through The Lens with Ryan Gentles

For me, Ryan Gentles, five years ago, the word “creative” wouldn’t be among adjectives I’d use to describe myself. Photography has allowed me to look at the world through an artistic eye while simultaneously appreciating the beauty within.

My approach to photography the very first day ’til now hasn’t changed; that is, exploration. This has led me to dabble in varying genres of photography, my favourites being Portraiture and Fashion. With each shoot I strive to improve “ever so slightly” by trying something new or continuing where I left off previously with a technique or idea. It is my hope that my artistic expression sparks conversions or ignites inspiration.

Made for More

An outtake from Davianne’s “Project Phoenix”. This is one of the most meaningful collaborations I’ve done to date. The shoot encompasses vulnerability, acceptance, resilience and self love, to name a few. I’m grateful for having the opportunity to make her vision for this shoot a reality.  This image is a mere page from her inspirational story.

Fun fact: Bentonite clay is good for both skin and creative concepts. With this shoot I wanted to step outside of the box and try something new and fun. This was my first time working with Rebecca, who went above and beyond bringing this concept to life. We didn’t have very long after the clay was dry to get the shot as the slightest movement would have bits flaking off. The set up for this was a single light w/ an umbrella and a reflector below for fill.

This was from a simple swimwear shoot at everyone’s favorite beach in Portmore, St. Catherine, Jamaica. After exhausting all the spots on the beach and trying to find a spot that had no one in frame, we decided to try an area nestled between some palm trees. I decided to settle with a simple monochrome effect for this one.

The immediate surroundings were not very interesting and so the coconut was the best option. Shooting skyward was the easiest way to eliminate the mundane background. I decided to change my picture style to B&W so I could pay more attention to the highlights and shadows; and that became the artistic focus of this image. I can honestly say that my main inspiration came from watching Imagine Dragon’s – “Thunder” music video while editing this set.

Tiffany

My first time shooting with Tiffany, but my second attempt at using colored lights. Carrying with my exploratory approach, this shoot sought to add an additional sensual element through the use of colours. My exploration didn’t stop at capturing the photos but also translated to my editing as well. After tweaking the colours, I experimented with adding motion blur in post production.

Celine

It was difficult selecting a particular photo from a particular shoot with Celine. For this look, it was all about framing and composition. Here the elements: foreground, middle-ground and background blend together to create depth within the photo. This was achieved by having some of the outfit bleed into the lower part of the image while blocking the sky (background) with some more of the outfit. This helps in directing the viewer to Celine’s delicate gaze.
