To Scatter Seeds: TERN Gallery’s Latest Collection

When you set foot on The Island House hotel in Nassau, Bahamas, home of TERN Gallery, there is an immediate tranquility and peace you feel upon entering the property. Art speaks if we listen, and environments that effortlessly accommodate that process are important, as they allow us to assimilate every nuance of art. For the last five years, TERN Gallery has worked assiduously to establish itself as a formidable yet unifying force in the Caribbean art community.

To Scatter Seeds, a captivating group exhibition featuring works by renowned Bahamian artists Cydne Jasmin Coleby, Kachelle Knowles, and Jodi Minnis, opened on March 27, 2025, and will run until May 17, 2025.

The exhibition delves into themes of generational differences, lineage, family, spirituality, and the diaspora. Each artist brings their unique perspective to the table, creating a rich and thought-provoking experience. Cydne Jasmin Coleby’s graphic collages examine the personal and collective relationships to trauma and conditioning, exploring the theme of family and heritage through childhood images and colonial iconography. Kachelle Knowles’ graphite works explore culture and intergenerational fashion, challenging traditional portrayals of Black men and boys and creating room for fluidity and self-expression.

Jodi Minnis’ sculptures and installations scrutinize traditional representations and tropes around Black, specifically Bahamian, women—using the metaphor of scattering seeds to explore themes of diaspora and heritage.

TERN Gallery, founded by Amanda Coulson and Lauren Perez, has established itself as a formidable force in the Caribbean art community since its inception in December 2020. The gallery provides a platform for Bahamian artists to gain local and global recognition, setting pathways for young and emerging artists to access careers in the arts. As a reflection of the gallery’s commitment to that vision, To Scatter Seeds will host Artist on Artist talks with Tessa Whitehead and Cydne Jasmin Coleby on May 1, 2025, followed by Jodi Minnis and John Reno Jackson on May 8, 2025, closing with Heino Schmid and Kachelle Knowles on May 15, 2025, at 2PM respectively.
