GenX Carnival Overcomes Costume Crisis to Secure Second Place at Miami Carnival

After shipping delays stranded costumes overseas, an emergency crew of Trinidadian and Grenadian artisans worked around the clock to keep ‘STING’ on the road

Carnival is as much an exercise in high-stakes logistics as it is an explosion of soca and spectacle. While masqueraders only see the feathers, the sound systems, and the euphoria of the road, pulling off a modern presentation requires an intricate global supply chain. When that chain snapped just days before Miami Broward Carnival 2026, GenX Carnival had to stage an unprecedented rescue operation to get their presentation across the stage.

Showcasing their 2026 presentation STING, the band preserved its top-three record by clinching second place in the coveted Band of the Year competition. The podium finish follows a championship run with Ravenous in 2024 and a third-place showing in 2025. This year’s silver trophy, however, was forged through pure grit: An international shipping crisis stranded costume consignments from China, throwing more than eight bands into disarray and keeping several from hitting the road entirely. GenX refused to forfeit. Mobilizing an emergency production unit at their band house, the directors flew in designers from Trinidad and Grenada to rebuild more than 100 costumes on non-stop, 24-hour shifts. “Miami 2026 tested us,” said Tagyei Belinfante, GenX Director. “Alongside the move to a new venue, costume shipping delays from China affected several bands, including ours. Our team had to respond quickly, and our masqueraders showed tremendous patience.”

For the band’s leadership, maintaining trust with revellers who invest heavily in the road experience was paramount. “Our priority was making sure our masqueraders had their costumes and could enjoy the experience they had paid for,” said Matthew Waddell, GenX Director and Head of Logistics. “We’re grateful to our team and for the patience our masqueraders showed.”

Production veteran Nisha Felice of Nisha Felice Productions, who was brought in to spearhead the band-house rebuild, noted that GenX’s refusal to leave masqueraders empty-handed pushed the team through the grueling turnaround. “More than eight bands did not receive their costumes from China, and some never made it onto the road,” Felice explained. “For the GenX team, that wasn’t an option, and that is something I respect. We flew in teams from Trinidad and Grenada and ran production around the clock at the band house, remaking more than 100 costumes. Production crisis management is what I do, and everyone involved was committed to getting our masqueraders ready.”

The logistical rebound came during a transitional milestone for Miami Carnival, which shifted its premier showcases to Broward County, Florida, for the first time in its 42-year history. Navigating both the venue change and an overseas supply failure made the eventual second-place award feel like a triumph of collective willpower.

“To still cross that stage and earn second place means a great deal,” Belinfante added. “We’re proud of everyone who helped get us there, and we’re carrying that determination into Trinidad and Jamaica.”

That regional energy now turns toward Port of Spain, where sister band GenXS will join forces with mas institution TRIBE for Trinidad Carnival on February 8 and 9, 2027. Marking the fourth consecutive year of their partnership, the collaboration will feature an official GenXS section and the signature GenXS Cart for two full days on the road, bridging revellers from Miami, Florida, and Kingston into the mecca of Caribbean Carnival.

From Trinidad, GenXS returns home to celebrate its fifth season on the road in Jamaica. GenXS Immortals Jouvert is slated for April 3, with the flagship Carnival road march following on April 4, 2027. To mark the anniversary, the band rolled out its tech-forward “Watch the Road” campaign, introducing GenXS Smart Glasses that allow masqueraders to record the jump-up directly from their own vantage point, alongside GenXS Moon Slides, a custom Carry-On Capsule, and insulated drinkware. “Five seasons in Jamaica gives us plenty to celebrate, but we’re just as excited about what comes next,” said Monét Flowers, Acting Marketing Director of GenXS Carnival. “‘Watch the Road’ puts our masqueraders’ point of view at the centre of the experience. From the smart glasses to what we’re planning for the road, we want to give people more ways to enjoy Carnival and keep those memories. There’s much more to announce.”
