Kevin Lamorell

My name is Kevin Lamorell, however, I am known on social media as THE VISUAL NINJA (a named derived by combining my love for martial arts as well as my passion for creating visual content). I am a photographer, graphic designer, and videographer from Trinidad and Tobago. My photography style can be defined as a mix of simplicity within a composition, high contrast imagery, and my distinct, vibrant colour palette.

I enjoy shooting in both urban and rural environments, however, it is based mainly on what mood or story I would like to convey in a particular image. I am also intrigued by street fashion and interesting pieces of clothing, which is something that I am currently experimenting with. As a young creator, my aim is to impact the world with my art. To capture stories of people, cultures, places, and passions while exploring different creative outlets. To show that anyone, no matter how young or old can, pursues their passion just as I did when I began shooting photos on my way to school with my phone back in 2016. After all, you gotta start somewhere, right?

Eyes, Golden Heart

To me, a portrait is a window to a person’s soul and this is one of the reasons that I enjoy shooting them. This particular photo is of my elder sister, Anika, who is basically my photography partner in crime. She was one of the main inspirations while I was getting into photography and continues to be. I wanted to portray her boldness and bravery in this shot which is why her face carried a simple expression. To get a contrast, I positioned her in a pocket of light that was bursting through a shadowed area. This, in turn, added emotion and showed off her beautiful brown eyes.

My Beloved

A vibrant, saturated yellow fills the frame to signify the warmth I feel in her embrace. My subject, not being a model started worrying about poses and such but after a few simple words from me along the lines of, “Just be yourself…. ”, I could see her adjusting herself, becoming comfortable, exuberating the natural beauty that I know and love. Shooting with those close to me is never a challenge because they always trust me and enjoy my company, and this photo is one that I will never forget. She is my love, my comfort, My Beloved.

Vinyl Connections

While collaborating with a fellow creator I took this image. The aim was to give off a spacey 70’s vibe while at the same time adding a new age spin to it. I wanted the viewer to feel a connection between the subject and interpret their own story from that felt emotion. They were lying on vinyl records to go with the theme of the shoot. I added grain in post (as I always do) to add to the vintage appeal.

Stranger In Red

© Kevin Lamorell

Carnival in T&T is my favourite time of year to go out and roam the streets for interesting portraits of jolly strangers. There is never a shortage of flamboyant colours and people. This picture was a candid I took as I was passing by resting masqueraders. I love this picture because even though she had on shades, I could tell that she was staring at me with intensity and fierceness. Although I will always have the memory of this moment, I will never know who was that Stranger in Red.

Unnatural Forms

© Kevin Lamorell

With this photo, I aimed to experiment with the form of the human body in a way that I haven’t seen before. I am always willing to try new things within my pictures, whether it be within the realm of colour, form, perspective or concept. I wanted this image to be more than a photo, it’s an art piece. In editing removed all the unnecessary elements behind the subject to maintain the simplicity and to keep the viewer engaged and focused on the Unnatural Form.
