Last December, we spoke with Jay Nahge, a Trinidadian artist and songwriter that does not conform to the expected soca sound. That interview left readers awaiting the ‘overwork’ that Nahge said he was going to put in for 2019.
“He wants to give the people his music, and before you know it everyone will know who Jay Nahge is. Trinidad better watch out. It’s time for the country to open their musical horizons and get on this international train that Nahge has opened for them.”
That is exactly what he did. The first quarter of the new year has just ended and Nahge has dropped a project that will leave fans very twisted.
What changed?
Nahge says the only thing that has changed since our last interview is his mindset. The artist we met last year was someone that was coming from a scared perspective, but now he is ready to conquer it all. He has been holding back musical pieces and what he is capable of doing as an artist. But all of that has now been pushed aside and everything is being released, from new music to new genres of Nahge.
New Single
His first single for 2019, released three weeks ago entitled “yoUrS’, has been getting great feedback. Some people deemed it “the best music video ever done in Trinidad”, and it has also been described as having an international quality.
Believe it or not, the song is about a true story. Nahge says the entire scenario for ‘yoUrS’ was from a time where he was the guy on the side. However, he further explained that he likes writing from different perspectives and telling stories about what people may be going through in life. He wants to make these stories 100% true.
“Love doesn’t always happen with prince charming; sometimes it’s not the main guy, it’s the guy on the side.”
The concept of ‘yoUrS’ seems deep. Even the crafting of the name leaves one thinking. The artist says he simply just decided to write the title of the song like that to add to a ‘Plot Twist’.
The video was done by Dominic Koo, who Nahge has worked with before on his first video. It’s interesting to note though that Nahge did the treatment for the video himself. He says for him, if he creates a song, he can see all the visuals that will be needed for each line. The aim was to make this vision of balconies, hotel rooms and restaurants come alive. This was actually Nahge and Koo’s very first piece of work for 2019, so it had to be perfect.
A Different Sound
The goal is always versatility. Nahge says what he is trying to do is not necessarily pick one sound to show the artist that he is, but to for his fans to recognize that they can get rap, sometimes an island accent like with ‘My Lane’ and now R&B. All of this encompasses of Jay Nahge.
For Nahge it is always about what he will do next. He loves singing and he has always had a love for R&B with admiration of Usher and other legends in the genre. This new sound shows his softer side; it’s as if he is unraveling layers of himself to us.
“This kid is just that kid that is ridiculously talented; he’s that kid that’s gonna destroy everything, the whole game.”
The Mixtape
All 10 songs written by Jay Nahge with a feature from Sienna Sage and Chopikal are unleashed in ‘Plot Twist’. It is here that we are exposed to Nahge’s sensitive side. It sets a type of mood that makes you want to take a slow car ride home while thinking about someone special. The project brings off something sexy for its listeners. It has been described by many as that type of bedroom music.
All of these songs were written years ago and have finally been released. They (the songs) are very close to Nahge’s heart, and tell stories of not only the twisted love story of ‘yoUrS’ but a ‘Dedication’ to three women that inspire him. These songs will get you deep in your feelings, so badly that you may just wanna “ride” to it.
Plot Twist will be exclusively released on CARIB VOXX at 7 PM

New Projects
Now if you thought Plot Twist was it for 2019, Nahge says that this is only the “foreplay”; what will come next is very close to “raw sex”. He let out some exclusive news right here at CARIB VOXX. The next project Nahge drops will be something spectacular and very much diverted from his soca roots.
He is working with a Jamaican producer and will be releasing some dancehall tracks. All these songs will represent the now of Jay Nahge.
How will he end 2019?
No other way than to end with a bang, of course! We can expect some international collaborations with artists from London and Toronto, as well as more music videos. He assures us that although he cannot say much, we must believe him when he says opportunities are about to take place!
“It’s not about making it, it’s about enjoying it. Everyone has their own path to work on, I am more serious now, no more procrastinating.”
