World-renowned Reggae selector Yaadcore has been spending most of his time in the recording booth lately. Recently releasing his third single ‘Tension‘ through California based independent label Delicious Vinyl Island. Following the release of his 2019 single ‘Ready Now’, he followed up with the 2020 release ‘The Calling’. “The Calling in particular is really to motivate people once again, as ‘Ready Now’ but more specific to their calling, something they were longing to do or accomplish”. Yaadcore along with fellow 12 Yaad Records labelmate Karbon released a 24-track mixtape dubbed ‘Sumn Different: Cyaa Seh Yuh Nevah Know’. Certainly, something different from the recent trend of artists releasing smaller bodies of work.

It’s not often we witness these kinds of transitions in Reggae music. When asked about his reason and inspiration to go the direction of becoming a recording artist, his response was, “After starting to play strictly roots music, I discovered a style where the selector would play a song then play the flip side, which was the riddim of the previous song played and the MC would toast or deejay on the riddim. When I started to do that, people would always say deejay or chant something on the riddim, so that was my first inspiration then discovering Mikey Dread was the selah because he is the DJ to have the first reggae radio program in Jamaica, producer and artist. I feel like I am him of this era”. Yaadcore goes on to state that for him, being an artist is currently more fulfilling, “I get to create music from scratch and not only play what’s being created”.

The original tastemaker gives his reason stating, “a mixtape is free, never wanted to stress the people’s pockets right now in the “plandemic”. Secondly, a mixtape is the best way to introduce a new artist’s music because the work of a DJ enhances the artist’s songs which makes it more palatable for the listener. Thirdly, transitioning from a DJ to artist after releasing one song for 1 year and a month, I wanted you to know how serious I am and that mi actually ‘Ready Now’. The numbers, however, would be accumulated with Karbon’s tracks along with two from Runkus & Lila Ike”

‘Sumn Different’ features production work from Teflon Zincfence, Damage Musiq, Ziah, Iotosh and veteran producer Computer Paul to name a few. If you haven’t yet listened to this mixtape, be sure to check it out above the article and look out for more works from Karbon and Yaadcore.
