Since his 2018 debut, Daddy1 has been making waves on the dancehall scene, having secured a spot on Carib Voxx’s Dancehall Artists to watch chart two years in a row. The young 6ixx affiliate has had a number of chart-topping hits namely ‘Out Here’, ‘Anthem’, and ‘Custom’ to name a few. He’s now signed to VP Records under which he released his latest project a six-track EP titled ‘1Brogad’.

Single releases are typically the norm in the dancehall space, therefore a compact project release is a feat worth mentioning as projects tend to signal career milestones in the dancehall industry. The term “Brogad” is Daddy1’s signifier which has gained regional traction as a term of endearment so much so that Jamaica’s Prime Minister Andrew Holness has taken on the moniker, Hon. BroGad. The project ‘1Brogad’ consists of a diverse track listing, appealing to women’s beauty in the track ‘Pretty Pon Snap’, while the other five tracks dispense messages of upliftment and inspiration.

As per usual, he also makes his affiliation to the 6ixx evident throughout reminding his audience of his astute loyalty.

In March of this year, he was featured in The Fader following the release of his ‘Rich’ single and music video. The single is also the lead for his ‘1 Brogad’ EP. A short two-part documentary preceded the EP prior to its release to accompany the project as an introduction. The documentary has been well received on YouTube since its release.

The featured documentary narrated by BBC-1 Extra’s Seani B, is a milestone achievement for the Montego Bay artist as it puts into perspective the demand for not only his music but the distinct sound he carries across audiences, particularly younger audiences. Daddy1’s sound is unique in that his flows are akin to a sort of 90’s rap style, where he adds catchy punchlines and adlibs on intervals. His sound is unprecedented, especially when considering the fact that he doesn’t ever curse, a staple feature of original dancehall culture which is rooted in anti-systemic sentiments. He maintains original dancehall sentiments in his messages which usually permeates ideas of wealth creation and lavish lifestyles, geared towards uplifting his peers (the youth). The lead single ‘Rich’ from his EP project reiterates the aforementioned sentiments, and has garnered upwards of half a million views since the music video has been released. How he’s managed to maintain relevance could be credited to his distinct style and catchy flow.
